The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck that controls the body's metabolism. Thyroid problems are common in Bangladesh, especially in women — and most are controlled with simple medicine.
Low hormone (hypothyroidism)
- Constant tiredness and sleepiness
- Weight gain
- Feeling cold
- Dry skin, hair loss, constipation
- Irregular or heavy periods
High hormone (hyperthyroidism)
- Racing heart and shaky hands
- Weight loss despite eating normally
- Feeling hot and sweating
- Restlessness and poor sleep
- Prominent or bulging eyes
Which tests are needed
- TSH — the first and most important test
- FT4 or FT3 — if needed
- Thyroid antibodies — to find the cause
- For a neck lump, a thyroid ultrasound and FNAC if needed
How to take the medicine
Thyroid tablets are usually taken in the morning on an empty stomach with water, with breakfast 30–60 minutes later. Take calcium or iron tablets at least 4 hours apart. Your doctor will repeat the TSH after 6–8 weeks to check the dose.
Thyroid in pregnancy
Thyroid hormone is essential for the baby's brain development. If you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, have your TSH checked on the advice of your gynecologist and hormone specialist.
