Jaundice is not a disease in itself; it is a sign of a problem in the liver or bile ducts. In Bangladesh, common causes are hepatitis A and E (from contaminated water and food) and hepatitis B and C.
Signs to see a doctor for
- Yellow whites of the eyes or yellow skin
- Dark yellow urine and pale stool
- Loss of appetite, nausea and weakness
- Pain in the upper right side of the stomach
- A blood test positive for hepatitis B or C
Emergency signs
- The patient is unusually drowsy or talking confusedly
- Vomiting blood or black stool
- The stomach swelling quickly
- Jaundice in pregnancy — hepatitis E is especially dangerous for pregnant women
Mistakes to avoid
- Spiritual healing, wearing garlands or herbal treatment
- Taking herbal medicines or extra paracetamol on your own
- Cutting out food altogether — you still need nutrition
- Stopping follow-up before your reports are normal
Fatty liver and hepatitis B
Fatty liver usually comes with excess weight, diabetes or high cholesterol; losing weight and exercising are the main treatment. Not everyone with hepatitis B needs medicine, but regular follow-up is essential. Get your family tested and vaccinated.
Prevention
- Drink boiled or safe water
- Avoid uncovered street food and drinks
- Get the hepatitis B vaccine
- Don't share needles, blades or razors
