A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain stops or a blood vessel bursts. It is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Bangladesh. With fast treatment, many patients return to normal life.
Know the signs
- One side of the face droops, or one side drops when smiling
- Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm or leg
- Slurred speech or trouble understanding
- Sudden blurred or double vision
- Sudden severe headache, dizziness or loss of balance
What to do right now
- Note the time the symptoms started — doctors need it
- Go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department or call an ambulance
- Give nothing by mouth, not even water — swallowing may be affected
- Don't give blood pressure medicine or aspirin on your own
What happens at the hospital
The emergency team usually does a CT scan quickly to see whether the stroke is from a clot or from bleeding. The two are treated completely differently, so treatment can't start without the scan. Bleeding or pressure in the brain may need a neurosurgeon.
Which doctor after a stroke
- Neurologist — medicines, finding the cause and preventing another stroke
- Physical medicine specialist and physiotherapist — getting walking and hand use back
- Medicine specialist or cardiologist — controlling blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems
Preventing stroke
- Check your blood pressure regularly and don't stop your medicines
- Keep diabetes and cholesterol under control
- Stop smoking and chewing tobacco
- Eat less salt and walk every day
